Academia–Industry
Smart mobility
Teach autonomous driving on a real vehicle platform.
Autonomous driving training for engineering and vocational programmes, combining open-source driving software, cloud development tools and a drive-by-wire vehicle kit that students can program.

The challenge
Autonomous vehicles are moving from research into deployment, and employers need engineers who have worked on them. For most departments the barriers are practical: sensors that do not work together, no real vehicle to test on and the cost of building a platform from scratch.
The solution
We provide a complete teaching and research setup in three layers: the driving software, the cloud tools used to manage and test it, and the hardware that puts it on the road. Students work with reference designs for uses such as shuttle buses, cargo transport and robotaxis.
The lab platform pairs a compact self-driving shuttle with a development kit built on an open drive-by-wire chassis, fitted with lidar, cameras, navigation sensors and an onboard computer. It runs widely used open-source autonomous driving software, so students graduate with experience of tools already used in industry.
Smart mobility
Capabilities
Development kit
An open drive-by-wire chassis with lidar, camera, navigation sensors and computer already installed and configured.
Self-driving shuttle
A compact shuttle that carries up to six passengers, as a working example of steering, braking and drive control.
Open-source software
Runs the Autoware open-source driving stack on ROS 2.
Simulation and cloud tools
Simulation, CI/CD pipelines, data management, fleet management and remote operation.
Teaching materials
Manuals and videos covering calibration, mapping and example functions such as obstacle avoidance and lane keeping.
Training programmes
Practical courses for staff and students on integration and operations.
Benefits
Students work on real hardware, not only simulations.
A lab that can be running in weeks.
A platform for coursework and capstone research.
Graduates with experience of industry tools.
How it works
- 01
Learn
Start with e-learning and a foundation training programme.
- 02
Build
Set up the starter kit and run example functions in simulation and on the vehicle.
- 03
Develop
Move on to your own algorithms, coursework and capstone research.
